Guitar Heroics – GWR Gamer’s Edition Gets off to a Rocking Start

by Gaz Deaves, Video Games Records, Adjudicator
Wednesday 6 February saw the official launch of the Gamer’s Edition that we’ve all been working so hard on for the last few months. Taking over the games area of the Zavvi store on Oxford Street in Central London, we set up three Guinness World Record attempts on Guitar Hero III: Longest multiplayer relay, highest score, and my personal favourite, highest score for a team of six!
Once the crowds started arriving, it was obvious there were some serious players in attendance, with practice runs producing some deeply intimidating scores. The atmosphere was charged, and for a while it looked like the current Guinness World Record holder, Luke Albiges, might be beaten by one of the night’s challengers. In spite of the best efforts of over 50 players, Luke kept his title and managed a score of 444,862 on Number of the Beast – beating his own personal best in the process.
The relay was kicked off by a mixed bag of special guests including The Rev and Snell, from The Prodigy’s live line-up, cast members from We Will Rock You (who turned up in full costume to an incredulous but positive reception from the assembled gamers) and the Boy Scouts of America. With two players competing on each song, we managed a total of 42 passes in two hours.
The final record attempt was for a team of six sharing one guitar – with five players taking a button each and the sixth using the strum bar. After a few practise runs, two teams made some impressive attempts on the Expert difficulty setting and managed a score that none of them could have achieved alone.
Special thanks go to Activision for helping us out with the Guitar Hero 3 gear and to Zavvi for providing us with the venue, as well as everyone who came down on the night to support the launch and break a Guinness World Record.
